“And he was casting out a devil which was dumb. And it came to pass, when the devil was gone out, the dumb man spake; and the multitudes marvelled.”

Luke 10:14.

Chapter Seven

FATHER GARRITY RUSHED TO THE hospital, where Bobby was already in the recovery room. His wife, Carol, and partner, Marty, were both pacing in the waiting room. He immediately hugged Carol.

“Can I do anything?” He offered.

“No, Tommy, I have been waited on hand and foot. The police have been great. They even left an officer at our house to watch over the boys.” She replied.

“How is he?” Garrity asked Marty. Marty was stocky, dark haired, and of Italian decent. He currently appeared completely disheveled. He had been Bobby’s partner for a decade.

“Father, he was very lucky. We usually run up against big guns like 40 calibers or 9mm weapons. This guy was probably one out of a thousand who was carrying a small 22 long semi-automatic. Plus, thankfully, he was not a good shot. He fired six times and hit Bobby once in the shoulder. As it was, because Bobby had on a tee shirt under his sweater, and both were covered by his leather jacket, the low caliber bullet lodged in his body close to surface. They removed it easily. Had it been a larger caliber, it could have sent him into permanent disability. As it is, he will be back on street in a week, max. He should be awake any time now.” Marty explained.

“Tell me exactly how it happened?” Garrity asked.

“Well, we saw this drug dealer we are familiar with doing an illegal street transaction. We pulled up on him and he immediately fled. Actually, it made no sense, because all we really wanted was some information and we have never busted him in the past. We pulled over and gave chase. Bobby is a faster runner than I and when the perp ran into a warehouse, Bobby just stood in the doorway and ordered him to come out. Standing in a lit doorway, from inside the dark warehouse, Bobby appeared like the perfect silhouette target. For some unknown reason, the perp opened fire with his little pistol. I had caught up with Bobby as he went down, so I returned fire. I hit the guy three times out of five shots. From what they tell me, he won’t make it. His bad luck, I guess.” Marty reported.

“Did Bobby suffer much pain?”

“Not that I could tell. You know Bobby. Once we got him up, he was in a blind rage. Had I not shot the guy, Bobby would have likely beaten him to death. He was also mad at himself, because he stood in that doorway when he knew better. He also knew he should have waited for me to catch up and then called for back-up.” Marty explained.

“Well, God was with him.” Garrity stated.

At that moment, a nurse entered and announced that Bobby was awake, but slightly groggy. They proceeded into his room, where Carol instantly kissed him and sat beside the bed, holding his good hand.
